UK Certificate of Origin

A Certificate of Origin is an important international trade document that certifies that goods in a particular export shipment are wholly obtained, produced, manufactured or processed in a particular country. It also serves as a declaration by the exporter.

The Certificates ensure that customs officials in various countries can check the reliability of Certificates of Origin by reference to a manageable list of authorised organisations that have been notified as being of recognised standing and competence.
The UK Certificate of Origin replaced the EC Certificate of Origin from 1 January 2021.
The determination of origin can be a complex issue, such as when imported goods have been further processed in the UK. Rules of Origin are required to determine the place of origin of a product. It is important as duties and restrictions depend upon the source of imports. There is variation between national governments with regard to the rules of origin.
In the UK, the responsibility for the administration of the issue of Certificates of Origin is delegated by the Government to the Chambers of Commerce and are the only UK organisations authorised to issue Certificates of Origin.
Issuing bodies also require all exporters to complete a Formal Undertaking confirming their acceptance of the Standard Rules, at which time a copy of the rules will be given to the exporter.
